Three rhythms, alternating

The music of a milonga runs in three streams. The DJ alternates them.

Vals3/4Flowing, roundThree steps to the waltz count
Milonga2/4Fast, bouncingShort, quick steps

At first, tango alone is enough. As you get used to it, you will feel the flow in vals and the playfulness in milonga.

Tandas — why 3–4 songs as a set

  • A tanda is 3–4 recordings from the same orchestra and era. Usually four tangos, three valses, or three milongas
  • Between tandas comes a cortina — a short non-tango track. It is the signal to change partners
  • Why in sets? To let one orchestra's sound be heard properly, and to give partner changes a steady rhythm. The whole milonga runs on this structure

Orchestras worth knowing

OrchestraEraIn one line
Carlos Di Sarli1940s–50sElegant and precisely rhythmic — "the gentleman of tango"
Juan D'Arienzo1935–Fast, crisp beat — "the king of rhythm"
Aníbal Troilo1940s–50sBalance of melody and emotion — the peak of Buenos Aires
Osvaldo Pugliese1940s–Intense and complex — the late Golden Age
Miguel Caló1940sClean, polished arrangements
Rodolfo Biagi1938–Rhythm-driven, with a sharp attack

You don't need the names at first. You need one sound that you like.

Finding orchestras you love

  1. Ask the DJ — telling dancers what they just heard is part of the job
  2. When a tanda ends, identify the track with a music recognition app
  3. Search the name on a streaming service and listen by tanda

One line to remember

The more you know the music, the more the same steps sound different.
