  • A marathon runs 20+ hours of dancing over a weekend. It takes stamina
  • An encuentro values traditional codes and stays small
  • Workshops are more often a program inside a festival than a standalone event

Pass structures

Festivals usually split into three.

  • Full pass — classes + all milongas
  • Milonga pass — milongas only
  • Class pass — classes only

If it is your first time, start with the milonga pass. Classes require the right level, and taking several in a day leaves you nothing for the night.

Preparing for your first one

  • Lodging — stay near the venue. Marathons run into the early morning
  • Clothes — bring enough for several milonga nights, and a spare pair of shoes
  • Role — marathons and encuentros balance leaders and followers. State your role accurately when registering
  • Deadlines — popular events sell out months ahead

What to choose

Start with a festival. It is large and open, and you can go without knowing anyone. Marathons and encuentros are better once you have floor experience — better for you and for everyone else.

One line to remember

A festival is not where you test your level. It is where you meet the milongas of other cities.
